This guy?- I have this guy I don’t know how to deal with…
Wherever you are God has called you to be a steward over a vision for a specific reason. Are you willing to let “this guy” be a barrier?
What does a person do when the truth comes to them?
1st task of a leader to figure out what reality is..
Not everyone is the same so you can’t deal with everyone the same…
3 categories of people: Wise, Foolish, Evil
The larger an organization the more likely you are to gather these. All of us have all of these parts but some people make a career out of these.
Wise- when the truth comes to them they change something to match reality. (A character that listens to the light) Adjusts, changes. When you confront them they thank you! David says a righteous man strikes me and it is a blessing. The leadership challenge is to make sure they are a match for what you need. Have to give them good feedback and coaching and keep them challenged appropriately.
Fool- A fool may be the smartest and the brightest or the most gifted. The problem is when the light shows up they adjust the light. They are allergic to it. They try to dim it. They try to change the truth, minimize it, and shoot the messenger. “If you would just…” If the first reflective mood is external that is a clue. They deny its reality they externalize it and they get angry. They do not own it. As a leader hopelessness is the best feeling you can have about this type of person. Bible says do not approach or confront a fool. Strategy: stop talking to them. Deal with the pattern that you don’t know how to give feedback in a way that it changes anything. I have to protect the vision, the culture, the team and we are going to talk about the fact that talking doesn’t help. I want to know from you how what I talk about makes a difference. Why is it hard for you? What do you feel when I correct you? What will we do if I do it and the change doesn’t happen, what are we going to do then? (There needs to be consequences- extreme or minor) ***There is great hope for fools- we need to lead them right and can redeem a person and a position. Leadership challenge: limit exposure, give them a choice and then follow through.
Whoever corrects a mocker [fool] invites insults. Whoever rebukes the evil person incurs abuse. Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. –Proverbs 9:7-9 (NIV)
Evil people need a different strategy because they have evil and destruction in their heart.- lawyers, guns, and money is the strategy here.
God has called you to lead people it is about getting people to follow the plan you will have wise people, fools, and evil.
